Excerpt from book,

page 32

In 1996, 10 year old Christopher Matthews was swept away in the raging Sturt River which runs across metropolitan Adelaide. He was courageously rescued by police officers from left to right being David O'Donovan, John Baldwin and John Potter. What cannot be seen is the support from the community and other emergency service organisations that also assisted in this rescue.

Shortly after the rescue I received a letter from an inmate in a New South Wales gaol. After watching the rescue on television he wrote:

"All through my life I have felt nothing but contempt and hate for the police force, now I am of a different opinion that the police force is needed to protect society from people such as myself but more importantly to come to the aid of those in time of need, that I know in my heart that these gallant policeman will risk their own lives to save any boy, no matter of what race or religion from dire circumstances."

He went on to say, "As a father of a young child, I feel comforted that there are officers of this calibre in the force if he was ever placed in peril."
