How to apply for access to SAPOL information

You can apply to access information held by SAPOL .

Freedom of Information (FOI) is subject to exceptions and exemptions necessary to protect:

  • essential public interests
  • individual private and business affairs.

Where an exception or an exemption applies you cannot access SAPOL information.

Step 1: Submit an application

A FOI application can be submitted in the following ways:

Step 2: Provide details of the information

Provide details of the information that you want to access. Include:

  • document name
  • date ranges
  • type of record
  • incidents that occurred.

Be specific and avoid making broad or general requests such as 'please provide all records related to me'.

If your application does not include specific details it will be returned.

Documents and information about third parties

If you want to access information about other people you must get their signed written consent and attach it to your application.

If you are unable to get their consent our staff may try to contact them.

Step 3: Include the application fee and verify identity

Include the application fee with your application.

Show proof of your identity at a police station or upload copies if submitted online.

The fee may be waived if you are a concession, unemployment, pensioner or full time student card holder. Upload a verified copy of the card to your online application or show at a police station with your PD360 form.

You may have to pay additional costs for:

  • finding, sorting, compiling and copying documents
  • contacting third parties
  • photocopies, written transcripts, photographs, audio/visual tapes or computer disks.

Step 4: Lodge your application

Lodge your application at a police station if not submitted online.

Your application will be processed within 30 days as required by the Act. An extension of time in which to deal with your application may be sought depending on the volume of documents and/or need for SAPOL to undertake consultation with third parties.

How to apply for an amendment to your personal records

You can apply for your personal information held by SAPOL to be amended if you believe that it is incomplete, incorrect, out-of-date or misleading.

Step 1: Complete an application form

A FOI application for amendment can be submitted in the following ways:

Step 2: Identify the reasons for the amendment

Give the reasons why you are seeking an amendment and upload/provide copies of the document(s) you are requesting be amended.

Step 3: Lodge your application

Lodge your application at a police station if not submitted online.

Your application will be processed within 30 days as required by the Act. An extension of time in which to deal with your application may be sought depending on the volume of documents and/or need for SAPOL to undertake consultation with third parties.

You have the right to ask SAPOL for a review if you are not satisfied with the FOI determination.

Give the reasons why you are seeking a review of your FOI request.

Step 3: Include the application fee

Include the application fee with your application or:

Attach a verified copy of your concession, unemployment, pensioner or full-time student card.

Make cheques and money orders out to South Australia Police.
