We are pleased to announce that the SA Police Mounted Operations Unit has officially moved into its brand-new base at Gepps Cross, after relocating from the historic Thebarton Barracks. Our 32 horses are now comfortably settled in this purpose-built complex. The training area for the Dog Operations Unit has also now been completed, enabling our dog handlers to commence the specialist training exercises for the police dogs on site.
This modern facility features 32 ventilated stables and 15 kennels ensuring our entire mounted and dog units are well accommodated. The onsite paddocks provide flexibility to move the horses as needed, while the large undercover arena, dog agility yard and training sheds for the dogs offer ample space for year-round training.
Construction is still underway for the Band build, as well as the administrative areas for both the MOU and DOU. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to enhance our facilities.

The City Staging facility is now operational with mounted and dog operations having moved into the new site.
The purpose-built facility has office space, six kennels, 12 stables and a round yard to support SAPOL’s operational capabilities in the city.
Mounted Operations Unit officers will use the site when they are deployed in the city, generally on Friday and Saturday nights, for events as well as for planned protests and training the younger horses during the week. Horses will be floated into the site from their home at Gepps Cross.
Dog Operations will also use the city staging area when they are deployed to the city.
The staging area will not be occupied 24/7 but will be operational around those deployment activities.
The location of the staging area guarantees the response time to be similar to the former Thebarton Barracks site.
While it is likely there will be a police presence at the site most days of the week, it is primarily a safe and secure location to prepare and rest horses when they are on deployment in the city. There will be no public access to the site.
