Road safety for people living with disability

The SA Police Road Safety Centre educators have recently participated in training to increase their awareness of persons living with disability. It is important that our road safety educators learn how to best engage with all students including those living with disability. The training to date has occurred with:

  • Autism SA – understanding autism and key strategies for supporting strategies for the teaching of road safety
  • Guide Dogs SA/NT – human guide training
  • Deaf Can Do – deaf awareness training.

To ensure the Road Safety Centre can adequately cater for students on the spectrum they have recently purchased sensory items that can be used for those that have sensory processing special needs, learning difficulties, behavioural and other development challenges. The items include activstools and fidgets. These items are readily available in the Road Safety Centre classrooms for teachers to access if a student requires them during a road safety session.

Two social narratives have been created to assist teachers and parents explain the SA Police Road Safety Centre experience to a student on the spectrum. A social narrative is a learning tool designed for a person with autism or on the autism spectrum. The social narrative explains how their visit to the Road Safety Centre will be structured and uses words and pictures to explain the program. The use of a social narrative can prepare a student with autism or on the spectrum to ensure the get the most from their road safety experience when visiting the Road Safety Centre.

Two social narratives have been designed for:

Both social narratives are available for downloading at SAPOL - Road safety resources (police.sa.gov.au)

The SA Police Road Safety Centre is a leader in road safety education, playing a vital role in reducing road trauma through enhancing the awareness, knowledge and skills of all road users through lifelong learning. The Road Safety Centre provides education on pedestrian, cycle and road safety, including road rules, to preschools, primary schools and community groups. These sessions can be tailored to meet the needs of specific groups. Sessions can be adapted to cater for students living with disability. They are delivered by police officers and are presented at the Road Safety Centre and off-site.
