Warning over power tool use during Fire Danger Season

SAPOL would like to alert and remind the public on the use of prescribed tools (cutters, welders, angle grinders) during the fire danger season. Recently, there has been a noticeable increase around fires starting recklessly during the use of these tools.

Prescribed tools are a major cause of many fires during the Fire Danger Season when legislated precautions are not followed. The use of prescribed tools during days of Total Fire Ban is not permitted unless a Schedule 10 permit has been issued. Schedule 10 permits can be applied for at your local council.

During the Fire Danger Season, on days that are not under Total Fire Ban restrictions, Prescribed Tools can be used when:

  • A 10-metre clearance of flammable vegetation is made.
  • Water or an appropriate extinguisher is at hand.
  • A person able to control the devices is present at all times while the activity is being undertaken.

Please see our quick animation video as a reminder of the rules or read the CFS fact sheet on Grinders, welders, cutters and engines
