Every day millions of people across the world embark on dangerous journeys for the sole purpose of finding safety and freedom. From Australia to nations across the globe, settling into a new environment after experiencing the perils of a refugee’s journey provides new opportunities and a new way of life.
Refugee Week is Australia’s annual celebration of refugees and the positive contributions they make to Australian society. Refugee Week 2023 runs from June 18 to June 24 and includes World Refugee Day on June 20.
This year’s theme – Finding Freedom – explores what it means to be free, to have your basic human rights upheld and to live in equality without fear of persecution.
Neighbourhood Watch SA and SA Police have a number of members from refugee backgrounds volunteering and working in a variety of roles across the state. We take this opportunity to recognise their ongoing commitment to the safety of their communities.
During Refugee Week a number of events will be held across the country showcasing people from refugee backgrounds, raising awareness of the refugee experience and the systemic barriers they face and celebrating the cultural and artistic contributions they make to their new homes.
