Neighbourhood Police Officer, Constable Chelsea McKinnon and a number of Mount Gambier community members are calling on local residents to join them in starting a new Neighbourhood Watch group.
A small group of local business owners, who feel a NHW group would help the well-being of the community, have organised a launch meeting at 6:00pm on Wednesday 1 June 2022 at the Southgate Motel and are inviting everyone and anyone from the country town.
The proactive group want the community to learn more about crime prevention practices and how to report criminal activity, while also connecting individuals.
Constable McKinnon believes a NHW group could make a real difference, she said:
“A NHW group is a great way to get to know other members of the community, to understand each other’s issues and to engage positively.
“It would be amazing to see a united front from individuals, businesses and SAPOL in combating crime in Mount Gambier, something which I think NHW would do.”
Sharon, one of the local business owners hoping to bring a group together is seeking proactive individuals, she said:
“I have worked in retail in Mount Gambier for over 30 years, 10 years of which owning my own small business. I also volunteer with St John Ambulance SA as a leader of the youth division.
“I’m really looking forward to connecting with like-minded individuals. You don’t need to have loads of time available or be active in the community already; we’re simply looking for people that want to make a positive impact. Whoever you are – young, old – whatever background please do consider joining us at our launch meeting!”
The group is hoping to grow and formally register as a Neighbourhood Watch SA group. To do this, they are looking for new members and volunteers willing to take on roles such as Area Coordinator, Secretary, Treasurer and Newsletter Editor.
If you are unable to attend the meeting but would like to get involved or require more information, please contact the Mount Gambier Police Station on 87351020.
