Blackmail arrest at South Brighton

Police will allege the owner of a shop selling tobacco at South Brighton was the intended victim of the blackmail attempt.

On Saturday 26 October detectives arrested a 28-year-old South Brighton man and charged him with blackmail.

He was refused bail to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court today.

Operation Eclipse tactical commander Detective Chief Inspector Brett Featherby said police will actively investigate offences of violence and extortion connected with the sale of illicit tobacco.

“We will pursue criminal charges when sufficient evidence exists, even if victims are reluctant or unwilling to assist the police investigation.

“Police will use the full suite of legislation available to prevent further violence between the groups involved in this illegal activity and ensure public safety.

“I would ask anyone who may have found themselves reluctantly involved in the illegal tobacco trade and subject to threats or intimidation to contact police as we can assist you.’’
