South Australia Police have today met with Department of Human Services and Drug and Alcohol Services regarding the high number of arrests in the Adelaide CBD recently.
Last night 12 people, ranging in age from 14 to 49, were arrested following incidents in North Terrace, Kintore Avenue, Station Road, Grenfell Street, Festival Plaza, and King William Road. The incidents occurred between 10.30pm and 3.30am.
Arrests related to two counts of assault emergency worker, fight in public place, hinder police, disorderly behaviour, possess knife in public place, five counts of aggravated affray and breach of bail. Five people were sprayed with OC spray.
In some instances, groups of individuals were accompanied by young children during the incidents that involved violent and unruly behaviour.
Two police officers were treated in hospital for injuries, while four other police suffered minor injuries during an arrest – they did not require medical treatment.
Police used surge capacity resources to ensure the safety of the public from the large groups of intoxicated people causing disturbances. They refused to leave the Declared Public Precinct on multiple occasions.
There are programs to assist in relocating people from the CBD, but these were not available at this time. This was raised in discussions.
