Course 71 ready to get it done

14 Aug 2024 12:46pm

Supported by mentors and loved ones, 13 new police officers were celebrated today after graduating from the South Australia Police (SAPOL) Academy.

Ranging in age from 19 to 30, eight men and five women are ready to kick off their new careers after being welcomed into the ‘blue family’.

Course 71 members offer a variety of former work experience, including from accounting, fast food, carpentry, retail and the Australian Army. Three former Police Security Officers are also among the new police officers.

Luke worked in SAPOL’s call centre before signing up as a cadet.

“I think the call centre helped with knowing the other side of SAPOL, knowing different radio codes and getting the first call from victims,” he said.

“I joined because I wanted to do something with a lot of diversity, that would keep me physically fit throughout my job, and to make a difference in the community and keep crime of the streets.”

The new police officer also plays football in the SANFL for West Adelaide and enjoys playing basketball in his spare time.

Taylor was a Police Security Officer (PSO) for three years before becoming a recruit and joining a tight-knit course.

“Being a PSO provided a great opportunity to build upon my communication skills and awareness regarding operational safety,” she said.

“The course really stepped up to support one another and bond over late-night study sessions.

“I’m excited to make a difference within the community, work in a team environment, and experience the diverse range of career opportunities that the organisation has to offer.”

Before the academy, Alex worked in project management and was teaching at university. He enjoys sport and supports Arsenal and Collingwood.

“I pursued policing because I like the versatility of the job and how it’s not a job where you are stuck behind a desk and you can go outdoors to work,” he said.

“I also like the variety of jobs within the organisation, and if you feel like switching jobs, you can stay in SAPOL and do something completely different.”

Course 71 members will be stationed at metropolitan and regional areas, including Whyalla and Port Lincoln.

SAPOL is currently recruiting and is keen to hear from people interested in an inspiring career with unmatched experiences and rewards.
