Course 77 goal-driven

12 Feb 2025 1:01pm

Hats off to 16 new community-minded police officers who graduated today from the South Australia Police (SAPOL) Academy.

Ranging in age from 19 to 45, 11 men and five women graduated this afternoon from Course 77 and bring diverse experience to policing.

Two graduates have transferable skills from time spent in the Australian Army, while two others bring experience from Australian Federal Police (AFP) and Victoria Police. Others have worked as a physiotherapist, barista, security guard, laboratory technician, bar tender, flight attendant, exercise scientist and personal care assistant.

Journeying from different walks of life, some Course 77 members have Vietnamese, Greek, German/Sri Lankan and Irish roots. A former South Australian Police Security Officer has also returned to SAPOL after a few years in Canberra as a domestic AFP officer.

Prior to joining SAPOL, Rory was in the Australian Army for four years as a rifleman and crew commander.

“The discipline engraved from the army made for a smooth transition into initial academy life,” he said.

Job variety, making a difference in the community, and a better work/life balance attracted Rory to SAPOL.

Similarly, fellow graduate Ahkil’s desire to help people and the variety of policing pathways encouraged him to sign up.

“I was working for an energy company, assisting customers with their energy needs and queries before joining SAPOL,” he said.

“Outside of work, I enjoy going on hikes, travelling, and spending time with family and friends. For fitness and fun, I do Olympic weightlifting, which helps me keep fit.”

Rory hopes to one day work in SAPOL’s Counter Terrorism and Security Section, while Ahkil is interested in Crime Gangs, and being able to work with other agencies to address complex investigations.

Both graduates encouraged anyone interested in a SAPOL career to take the leap.

“You’ll never look back. Just be prepared to put in the time at the academy. It’s only nine months, and it will fly by. Also keep a good level of fitness before joining and maintain that once you’re in,” Rory said.

Ahkil added that ‘if at first you don’t succeed try, try again’.

“From my personal experience, I would say, if you want to be a police officer, do not give up and continue applying if you are unsuccessful,” he said.

“Take any feedback that they provide you and use that to your advantage to work on the areas that need addressing.”

Course 77 members will be stationed to metropolitan and regional postings, including Port Pirie, Whyalla and Berri.

SAPOL is currently recruiting and is keen to hear from people interested in an inspiring career with unmatched experiences and rewards.
