Two men have been charged following a bushfire at Penfield Saturday afternoon.
About 2.30pm Saturday 2 November emergency services were called to Womma Road after reports that a grass fire had been sparked by an angle grinder and was now out of control burning in a southerly direction.
The fire burnt approximately 33 hectares of grass and caused damaged to a shed and several glass houses. Three people were taken to hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. No homes were impacted.
Following an investigation, a 31-year-old Waterloo Corner man and a 31-year-old Penfield man were arrested at the scene and have been charged with cause a bushfire being recklessly indifferent.
They were both refused bail and will appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Monday 4 November.
Roads in the area were closed for just over three hours while emergency services brought the fire under control. Police would like to thank the public for their patience and assistance.
Police would like to remind the public as we head into fire danger season that police will take a zero-tolerance approach to fires caused by deliberate, reckless or negligent behaviour – bushfires not only destroy communities and properties but have the potential to kill.
