13 Jun 2024 6:39am

An elderly woman has been saved by a police officer after a unit caught fire early this morning at Semaphore South.

About 12.30am on Thursday 13 June, emergency services were called to Military Road after reports of a unit on fire.

Western District patrols were quickly on scene and saw flames coming from the unit.

An elderly occupant was at the front door but she was unable to get out due to mobility issues.

A patrol officer entered the unit which was well ablaze and carried the 90-year-old woman out of the inferno and down the street away from the fire.

Occupants of nearby units were also evacuated.

MFS crews were quickly on scene and contained the fire to the single unit however there was minor smoke damage to an adjacent unit.

The elderly woman suffered non-life threatening smoke inhalation and she was taken to hospital for observation.

The police officer was assessed at the scene by SAAS for minor smoke inhalation.

The fire is non-suspicious however the cause is undetermined at this time.
