Supported by mentors, colleagues, friends and family, today 12 new police officers graduated from the South Australia Police (SAPOL) Academy after months of comprehensive training.
Eight men and four women, ranging in age from 19 to 35, have been welcomed into the blue family after graduating from Course 74.
The new police officers bring a variety of work experience to the role including as a Police Security Officer and in corrections, retail, finance, and store management.
Tanuj previously worked in the hospitality industry for almost 10 years and was duty manager for a Riverland pub before joining SAPOL.
“While working as a duty manager, I developed and improved my communication and problem-solving skills,” he said.
“I had to deal with many situations involving intoxicated people, crowds and sometimes even fights.”
Interested in SAPOL’s 40 plus career opportunities, Tanuj also attributed his new career path to his Indian roots.
“I have family members back in India in defence forces and in my state’s police force, and they are my major role models and inspiration to join SAPOL,” he said.
“In my academy experience, our Echunga trip was memorable, as it helped my course to build trust and bonding among each other. Also, it tested my limits both physically and psychologically.
“I have become more dedicated towards my work, confident in myself, and have more trust in my colleagues.”
Fellow graduate, Tom, was born in Bristol, England and emigrated to South Australia with his family at three years old.
Prior to joining SAPOL, he spent seven years working in a roadside assistance call centre across a variety of roles including call taker, dispatcher, team leader and shift supervisor.
“These roles gave me a good understanding of customer service, resource management and coaching and developing colleagues,” Tom said.
“I was also a member for the State Emergency Service. I have always had a strong community mindset and want to help when people are in need.”
Tom was similarly attracted to SAPOL’s job diversity and variety and has enjoyed coming out of his shell at the academy.
“The most memorable moment for me was when our course was sworn in,” he added.
“We had worked and studied incredibly hard since the start of our time at the academy. The moment I saluted the Assistant Commissioner and was given my badge is a moment I will never forget.”
Both Tanuj and Tom hope to grow in their policing careers and to one day become a Sergeant. Tom is also interested in moving to the Criminal Investigation Branch, while Tunjah is open to “any good opportunity” within SAPOL.
Course 74 graduates will be stationed to metropolitan and regional postings, including Whyalla, Murray Bridge, Port Augusta, and Port Lincoln.
SAPOL is currently recruiting and is keen to hear from people interested in an inspiring career with unmatched experiences and rewards.
