Building fire at Elizabeth

A man was arrested after allegedly starting a fire that damaged a building at Elizabeth last night.

Police, fire crews and paramedics were called to the Playford Boulevard, Elizabeth just after 10pm on Wednesday 12 March by reports of a fire in the community arts precinct.

A fire started outside the premises housing a community centre and had spread to the exterior of the building and caused extensive damage.

The fire was extinguished by MFS crews.

A 53-year-old man, whose trolley and belongings were destroyed by the fire, sustained minor burns trying to extinguish the flames.  The victim was treated at the scene by paramedics.

There was no one inside the building at the time of the fire.

A 29-year-old Davoren Park man was arrested nearby and charged with arson and property damage.  He was refused police bail and will appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court later today, Thursday 13 March.

Northern District CIB detectives and crime scene investigators attended and examined the scene.
