While it is the silly season, South Australia Police (SAPOL) reminds everyone that safety is everyone’s responsibility.
Don’t get your tinsel in a twist this hectic holiday period! Follow these 12 simple tips for Christmas:
Keep your purse or wallet close to your body when shopping and don’t let your guard down.
Make sure a website is authentic by carefully checking the address is spelled correctly. It also pays to read reviews.
Ideally, type a website in rather than clicking on a link in an email, text or post. It’s easy for scammers to set up fake websites that are like the real thing.
Lock your property (including sheds) and tell your neighbours and relatives that you will be away. If you observe suspicious activity report it by calling 131 444.
Store valuables, including presents, out of sight of opportunistic thieves.
Consider when and what you post on social media while you are away. Don’t advertise that your home may be vacant. Organise a house sitter or someone to check on your property.
Activate your alarm if you have one installed and consider putting interior lights on timers.
Be aware of drink spiking and never accept a drink from a stranger.
It is an offence to drive a motor vehicle whilst under the influence of drugs or alcohol. All road users can contribute to safety on our roads by engaging in responsible driving behaviour.
Think about how you’re going to get home. Pre-book a taxi/rideshare or arrange a
lift with a designated driver. Let someone know about your plans – and tell them if
they change. Never accept a ride with strangers.
Arrive to your destination alive and remember life is a gift.
Where possible, travel with a friend or group and keep to illuminated areas at night. Look after your friends. Don’t let them go off on their own, and make sure they all have a safe ride home.
Consider the above tips and check the list twice. It may be the deciding factor if you’re naughty or nice.
