The fatal house fire at Woodville Gardens on Thursday morning has been declared a murder by Major Crime Investigation Branch.

Just after 4am on Thursday 7 November, police and emergency services were called to 3 Essex Street, Woodville Gardens after a passerby noticed flames coming from the front of a house.

Once the fire was extinguished, a body believed to be 72 year old Bill Frangos was found inside. Formal identification procedures are yet to be completed and police are maintaining contact with his family.

Major Crime Acting Operations Inspector Detective Matthew Fitzpatrick said following a comprehensive examination of the scene, it’s believed the fire was deliberately lit and Bill was murdered.

“Detectives and other specialist police from the Major Crime Investigation Branch, Western District CIB and uniform patrols continue to conduct extensive enquiries at Essex Street and the surrounding area,” he said.

“The investigation is progressing very well and despite the fire, we have recovered evidence from within the house and we are receiving excellent cooperation from the community.

“Police are maintaining an open mind in respect to the motive and who may be responsible for Bill's murder but believe it may be someone known to him.”
