Arrest following break-in and pursuit southern suburbs

A couple have been arrested following a pursuit in the southern suburbs this morning.

Just before 3am, Friday 28 June, witnesses reported two people had broken into a communal garage on The Esplanade, Somerton Park and were breaking into vehicles.

A short time later the resident of an apartment on The Esplanade awoke to noises and discovered a person inside the property, the occupant immediately called police and the suspect fled the scene in a dark coloured vehicle.

At 3.10am patrols spotted a Hyundai sedan travelling on Majors Road, checks on the registration showed the vehicle had been stolen the day before from Edwardstown.

Police attempted to stop the vehicle and the driver refused to stop. It was pursued onto Main South Road, where it joined the expressway travelling on the incorrect side of the road.

Police terminated the pursuit due to safety reasons but and kept covert observations.

The car was seen to travel on Stanlake Avenue, St Mary’s and just after 3.25am the car was found abandoned in a driveway on Norman Court having collided with a caravan parked in the drive.

Patrols and Dog Operations with PD Jax were quickly on scene and located a male hiding in a nearby construction site, where he was arrested.

While Polce were still on scene they recognized the second suspect, from CCTV who walked past. She was also arrested.

Police searched the car and located property believed stolen from the earlier break-in's at Somerton Park.

A 22-year-old woman from Rosewater and a 36-year-old man from Clovelly Park have been charged with illegal use, serious criminal trespass, unlawfully on premises, theft and dangerous driving to escape police pursuit.

Following further investigations, forensic evidence led to the man being further charged with a Robbery which occurred on 9 May 2015 at a hotel in Findon.

They have been refused police bail and will appear before the Christies Beach Magistrates Court today, Friday 28 June.
