Be cautious before the meet

16 Apr 2025 12:45pm

Southern District Detectives are investigating several “catfishing” type incidents in the southern suburbs in recent months. The offending involves members of the public who have communicated with individuals on social media platforms that are suspected to be using fake on-line profiles.

During these communications there has been a mutual agreement to meet up in person during the hours of darkness. These meetings have been at public places where there is either limited or no CCTV or other security measures.

After attending the agreed location several victims have been approached by people unknown to them who are not the individual, they believed they would be meeting. During these meetings several victims have been threatened and had personal property stolen from them.

It is believed in these cases the meetings have been set-up with the specific intention to steal property.

The public should use caution when meeting with people who they have only communicated with on social media platforms.

The community are also reminded when meeting under similar circumstances to attend public and well-lit locations, preferably areas that are equipped with CCTV for safety and added security.

Anyone with information regarding this type offending are urged to contact Crime Stoppers.  You can anonymously provide information to Crime Stoppers online at https://crimestopperssa.com.au or free call 1800 333 000.
