Just before 10pm last night, police were called to Gawler Bypass at Gawler Belt in relation to a vehicle accident.
Upon arrival, police located a black Daihatsu station wagon with significant damage.
The two occupants, a 17-year-old driver and 10-year-old passenger from Blakeview were taken to hospital for observations but have since been released.
The vehicle was damaged beyond repair and was towed from the scene.
The driver told police that they were travelling north on the Gawler Bypass, when they swerved to miss a kangaroo which had hopped onto the road. In doing so, they went down the embankment, collided with a pole, before being speared across to the other side of the road and rolling several times.
Chief Inspector Ryan Bowman, the Acting Officer in Charge of Barossa Local Service Area said “Whilst it is unfortunately common for these types of road accidents in country areas, what saved the life or lives of these two occupants was they were wearing a seatbelt. Without doubt, if they hadn’t of been wearing a seatbelt, this likely would’ve ended in a family having to deal with trauma at Christmas time of losing a loved one”.
