South Australia Police will deploy two targeted statewide traffic this weekend, as tens of thousands of patrons enjoy multiple festivals.
Pedestrians are among the most vulnerable road users, with 4 lives lost on our roads so far this year.
SA Police Road Policing Section Inspector Mark Atkinson said police will have an increased presence in and around festivals, but pedestrian safety is a everyone’s responsibility.
“Pedestrians should use designated crossings and do not cross roads while distracted by a mobile phone,” Inspector Atkinson said.
“Motorists should be extra vigilant around festival areas, reduce their speed and give way to pedestrians.”
Those riding e-scooters must wear a helmet, watch out for pedestrians and keep left when using pedestrian crossings.
People will also be making their way to holiday destinations over the long weekend, increasing the volume of vehicles on our regional roads.
“Exercise patience, take regular driving breaks, stick to speed limits and overtake and change lanes only when it’s safe to do so,” Inspector Atkinson added.
“Set your music play list and GPS before driving so you’re not tempted to touch your mobile phone whilst driving.
“If you’re intending to drink, plan ahead- use public transport, taxis or organise a designated driver.”
Throughout the long weekend, SA Police will conduct Operation Stop Drink Drug Drive and Operation Safe Long Weekend, targeting the Fatal Five factors – drink and drug driving, speeding, distraction, dangerous driving and not wearing a seatbelt correctly.
“All road users have a role to play in keeping our roads safe. Do the right thing and make it a great long weekend for everyone,” Inspector Atkinson said.
During the 2024 March long weekend, there were zero lives were lost and seven serious injuries.
