Police issue warning over online sales

19 Mar 2025 3:01pm

South Australia Police are currently investigating a series of deception offences occurring across metropolitan Adelaide involving the fraudulent sale of goods advertised online.

Offenders are targeting high-value items such as mobile phones, motor vehicles, and other expensive goods listed on platforms including Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace.

In these cases, sellers meet with a prospective buyer who claims to have transferred payment electronically. The buyer then presents a screenshot showing an ‘OSKO’ payment confirmation, including the seller’s account details and confirmation of transfer. These screenshots are high quality and appear legitimate.

Believing payment has been made, the seller hands over the goods. However, no funds are ever received, resulting in significant financial loss to the seller.

SAPOL urges all online sellers to take the following precautions:

* Do not release any goods until you have confirmed payment has been successfully received in your account.
* Do not rely solely on screenshots or electronic payment confirmations provided by buyers.
* Contact your bank directly if you are unsure whether a payment has cleared.

If you’ve been affected or have any information about these incidents you are encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a report at www.crimestopperssa.com.au

Information can be provided anonymously.
