Man charged over assault on elderly man in park

24 Apr 2025 3:10pm

A man has faced court charged with multiple counts of assault after an incident that occurred early on Tuesday morning at Risdon Park.

It will be alleged a 79-year-old local man was out for his morning walk at Woodward Park just before 7am on Tuesday 22 April when he was assaulted and knocked to the ground by a younger man.

The suspect then allegedly stole the elderly veteran's military hat and watch.

When a 56-year-old Risdon Park woman, who was walking her dog, attempted to assist the elderly victim, she and her dog were also assaulted.

A third victim, a 49-year-old Risdon Park man, was also assaulted when he tried to intervene.

The suspect then left the scene.

The elderly man was taken to hospital to have his injuries assessed.  The other victims did not require medical treatment.

The man's hat was recovered; however, his silver Workman's watch has not yet been found.  Anyone who locates the watch, possibly discarded in the vicinity of Woodward Park, is asked to contact Port Pirie Police on 8638 4000.

Following investigations, later that night, a 24-year-old Risdon Park man was arrested and charged with disorderly behaviour, property damage, aggravated assault, aggravated robbery, ill treatment of an animal, and two counts of assault emergency worker.

He was refused police bail and appeared in the Port Pirie Magistrates Court yesterday.

Anyone else who witnessed this incident is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at www.crimestopperssa.com.au
