Road safety education

The SA Police Road Safety Centre aims to deliver evidence-based road safety programs and initiatives that are contemporary and age appropriate. The Road Safety Centre Foundation Document explains and supports the seven principles that the Road Safety Centre programs are based on. All programs are FREE and to find out more about what programs are available, click on the headings below.

Preschool students

Programs for Preschool and Primary Students Teacher's Information

Introduction to road safety at the Road Safety Centre - Preschool

(90 minutes at the Road Safety Centre or 45 minutes on site)

This session includes:

  • introduction to road safety
  • playing in safe places
  • stop, look, listen, think
  • seatbelt safety
  • wearing a safety helmet
  • calling Triple Zero (000) when there is an emergency
  • practical riding on the mock roadway.

Programs for Preschool and Primary Students Teacher's Information

Keeping safe on the road – introduction to road safety - Reception to Year 3

(90 minutes at the Road Safety Centre or 45 minutes on site)

This session includes:

  • playing in safe places
  • stop, look, listen, think
  • seatbelt safety
  • wearing a safety helmet
  • calling Triple Zero (000) when there is an emergency
  • practical riding on the mock roadway.

Road safety with SA Police – introduction to road safety - Year 4 to Year 6

(90 minutes at the Road Safety Centre or 45 minutes on site)

This session includes:

  • introduction to road safety
  • Australian Road Rules
  • the appropriate use of cycles, skateboards, scooters and roller skates
  • calling Triple Zero (000) when there is an emergency
  • practical riding on the mock roadway.

School monitor training

  • The 45-minute session is aimed at school students 10 years of age and over, teachers and school volunteers who are required to operate a school crossing or pedestrian activated traffic lights. Training takes place at the students' school and is valid for a 12-month period.

School holiday program

  • The two-hour session is aimed at children aged 5 years to 8 years and 9 years to 12 years. This program provides an opportunity for children to gain vital road safety education which is traditionally only offered as part of school excursions. Secondary school students

Year 7, 8 and 9 – How to be safe on the road – road safety session (60 minutes)

This session is aimed at Year 8 and 9 students. Session includes:

  • passenger responsibilities
  • pedestrian safety
  • cycling safety
  • the use of wheeled recreational devices
  • being safe around public transport
  • an introduction to the Graduated Licencing Scheme
  • Fatal Five.

Year 10 – A guide to obtaining your driver's licence road safety session   (90 minutes)

This session is aimed at Year 10 students. Session includes:

  • Graduated Licensing Scheme
  • Fatal Five
  • crash statistics
  • choices, risks and consequences
  • ANCAP safety ratings
  • personal property securities register
  • reporting to police.

Year 11 – Youth driver education road safety session  (90 minutes)

This session is aimed at Year 11 students. Session includes:

Safer journeys together - Learner driver and qualified supervising driver road safety session

This presentation is designed as a two-part package, providing a session for students and parents/ guardians. This session is delivered at SAPOL's Road Safety Centre simultaneously and offers road safety information to both groups.

For students  (90 minutes) 

This session discusses the graduated licencing scheme and the conditions associated with a learner's permit and provisional licence. Crash survivor Holly Scott talks to participants about her crash and recovery. Other topics include:

  • the Fatal Five
  • risk-taking behaviour
  • peer group pressure
  • passenger safety
  • the consequences of making poor choices on the road.

For parents/guardians  (90 minutes) 

This session provides information to parents / guardians teaching learner drivers on the changes to the road rules and encourages parents / guardians to act as good road safety role models. The father of crash survivor Holly Scott talks to the group about his experience and supporting his daughter after a serious injury crash. The session also provides parents / guardians with information regarding:

  • supervising driver conditions
  • the Fatal Five
  • the importance of ANCAP safety ratings on vehicles
  • personal property securities register
  • reporting to police.

This session is aimed at businesses and community groups whose employees may be required to drive as part of their employment. Session includes:

Australian Road Rules road safety session (60 minutes)

This session is directed at all road users. Session includes:

  • reporting to police.

Regional driving awareness road safety session (60 minutes) 

This session is directed at road users that drive on regional roads within South Australia. Session includes:

  • tips for driving safely on regional roads
  • driving with heavy vehicles
  • passenger responsibilities
  • ANCAP safety ratings
  • personal property securities register

A guide to obtaining your motorcycle licence road safety session (90 minutes) 

This session is conducted at the Road Safety Centre and is aimed at people who are wanting to obtain their motorcycle licence. Session includes:

Older road users road safety session (60 minutes) 

This session is aimed at older road users. Session includes:

Fitness To Drive road safety session (60 minutes).

This is a trimmed down version of the Older Road Users session that covers:

  • pedestrian safety
  • fitness to drive
  • motorised wheelchairs
  • crash statistics
  • reporting to police.

International students' driver education road safety session (60 minutes)

This session is aimed at international students who want to drive in South Australia. Session includes:

  • Australian Road Rules
  • Fatal Five
  • ANCAP safety ratings

  • reporting to police.

Community and youth groups (90 minutes)

This session is aimed at young people between the ages of 5 and 14 years. Session includes:

  • introduction to road safety

Disability groups (60 - 90 minutes)

This session is aimed at people with disability. Session includes:

SA Community Football Club road safety session (60 minutes)

This session is aimed at those who play football (or other sports attached to that club) in the community. The Road Safety Section partners with the SANFL and community football clubs to provide road safety education to 16 to 24-year-old drivers. Session includes:
