Counterfeit banknotes

Here are some quick ways to identify a genuine Australian banknote and what to do with a banknote that you think is counterfeit.

Look - genuine banknotes

  • have a clear window that is part of the note, not an addition.
  • have a clear window with printed images that should not be able to be rubbed off.
  • have fine line patterns on each side and are multi-coloured.
  • have microprint or tiny, clearly defined text on the note.
  • have features on both series of polymer notes that fluoresce under UV light.

Feel - genuine banknotes

  • are printed on polymer (plastic) and have a distinctive feel.
  • have slightly raised ‘intaglio’ printing that can be felt on numbers and portraits.

Tear - genuine banknotes

  • are difficult to tear. Most counterfeit notes are printed on paper and can be easily torn.

Dealing with suspect banknotes

Counterfeit notes have no value; you will not be reimbursed.

If it is a real banknote, you will receive full value for them.

Your safety is the priority, so don’t take any actions that may compromise this.

You do not have to accept a banknote if you think it’s counterfeit. Advise the person you believe the note may not be genuine and police will be notified.

If you receive a banknote you suspect is counterfeit

Handle the note as little as possible and place in an envelope or paper cover. Note the person’s description/details of how it came into your possession.
