Staff theft: common methods

Theft is theft. Staff are not exempt from stealing from your business. Stealing means taking goods or services without payment or permission.

Some of the common methods are refund fraud, sweethearting, skimming or identity theft of customer information.

Refund frauds

Staff issuing fake refunds on gift cards or sales and crediting the amount to their own or a family or friend’s account or card.

Sweethearting

Employees give discounts or free products or services to friends or family.

Skimming

When staff overcharge for a purchase and take the difference.

Identity theft

Stealing customer information to benefit themselves in some way.
