Security when you're away from home

Here are five tips to help keep your home secure while you’re away.

Lock up

Lock all doors, windows and gates. Secure or take spare keys with you, including keys for any vehicles left at home.

Lighting

Use smart lighting/appliances or a simple timer switch to turn on a light, the TV or radio to help make the property seem occupied.

Look ‘lived in’

Consider asking a trusted friend or neighbour to close curtains after dark, park their vehicle in your driveway, empty your letterbox and bring in bins.

Manage deliveries

Pause regular deliveries like mail or newspapers and arrange for collection of online shopping packages.

Social media

If you post on social media, ensure posts can only be seen by friends. Consider waiting until you return to share details of your time away.
