Grain security

Grain, hay, seed and the copper wiring around silos are valuable commodities. This makes them a good target for thieves – and some may work in the industry.

Theft from rural properties is high reward, low risk for offenders, and drones are increasingly being used to gather information. Report suspicious activity, including drone sightings, to police.

Here is further information to help keep your produce safe.

Lock

Lock storage bins/sheds, loading equipment or power access. Consider fencing the storage area and lock entrance gates.

Light

Ensure storage areas are well lit. Use movement sensor lighting for after dark.

Monitor

Keep track of grain input/output so you can identify irregularities. Consider installation of cameras with the ability to be monitored from a phone or at the residence.

Visible

Position silos/storage in high visibility areas; preferably within sight of the main or neighbour’s residence. Keep grain trucks close to the house overnight, not in paddocks.

Communicate

Get to know your neighbours and share information about suspicious activity/persons. Install signage on main entrances promoting your security measures.
